Disclosing Unanticipated Medical Outcomes and Adverse Events

MEDICAL INSURANCE EXCHANGE of CALIFORNIA PRESENTS:

The Institute for Healthcare Communications' Disclosing Unanticipated Medical Outcomes and Adverse Events is an interactive workshop that examines the necessary elements of providing a timely and effective disclosure when an unexpected medical outcome occurs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the program, participants will:

1. Understand the rationale for greater openness when there has been disappointment with care and possible injury associated with a medical or systems error;
2. Appreciate others’ perceptions of the situation (e.g., patients, family, colleagues, staff);
3. Consider steps to take before, during and after a disappointing outcome;
4. Acknowledge and respond constructively to the emotional and ethical challenges in these situations; and
5. Practice disclosure skills in a variety of clinical situations.

Dinner will be served 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. Program runs from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m

The Institute for Healthcare Communication (IHC) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. This workshop is designed by IHC as a continuing education activity meeting the criteria for 2.5 hours in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. IHC is accredited by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to provide prescribed credit for continuing medical education programs. This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for 2.5 hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians. IHC also maintains a joint-partnership with the University of Pittsburg School of Nursing, an accredited CE provider by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation.
